Biomass energy is a renewable energy source where organic residues from biological or industrial processes are used to produce energy. This waste can come from vegetation, animals, agricultural industry or a city.

A clear example of wastes that can be used for biomass energy production are: olive pits, human waste, animal waste, fruit peels, etc.

It is important to clarify that these organic wastes are called biomass (hence the name 'biomass energy').

Types of biomass energy

Depending on where the biomass comes from, it can be classified into two categories, which are as follows:

- Natural: this is when the waste comes from natural places. That is, when they come from forests, plants, crops, bushes and in general, any place where waste is generated without any industrial process involved.

- Residual: when the waste comes from more industrialized sources or is generated by humans and their action on the Earth, the biomass becomes known as 'residual biomass'. The most common sources of this biomass are the following: slaughterhouses, cities (urban garbage), agricultural waste (such as olive pits), etc.

In addition, it can also be qualified depending on the amount of water it contains. If we take the latter into account, we can say that there are two types of biomass:

- Dry biomass: leftovers from the forestry industry, firewood, among others.

- Wet biomass: human waste, leftovers from the manufacture of oils, among others.

Depending on the machinery to be used for the generation of biomass energy, one of the two ways of classifying biomass is used (for example, if the way to obtain biomass will be by incineration, priority will be given to those residues that fall into the category of dry biomass. The opposite happens if it will be used for gas generation, since natural or wet biomass will be taken into account).

Finally, these classifications can be further subdivided, in case you have a huge variety of waste.

How is biomass energy produced? Ways of producing biomass energy

The most common way of using biomass to produce energy is by using it as fuel to be burned in huge boilers, which are responsible for collecting the heat to later produce energy by means of other techniques. It is important to note that the ashes that remain after incinerating the biomass can be used as fertilizer.

Another way to use biomass is to store it and wait for it to decompose. During this process, gas is generated which, after being treated correctly, works like conventional gas (being possible to use it for an infinite number of things).

Biomass can also be used to produce ethanol and different types of oils, so its usefulness is not only in energy production.

How is biomass energy used?

Once biomass energy is produced, it can be used for a myriad of things, for example:

- Supply electrical systems so that the use of other additional sources is avoided.

- To function as a main source of electrical energy in certain industries, especially in those that are dedicated to the felling of trees or manufacture of wood-based furniture.

Basically, this energy, when treated correctly, begins to provide all the benefits of electrical energy and works as such, therefore, it can be used for anything that requires electrical energy.
